SHE LIVES! Hey Hey Heyyy…

November 24th, 2009

It’s true, I am indeed alive. And I feel like a bad boyfriend, the sort that promises to call and doesn’t, or who fails to show up to your graduation party at the Central Park Boathouse when he knew about it for weeks and weeks in advance, and half your extended family flew in specially, and you had personalized menus printed for fuck’s sake. Oops. MOVING ON…Anyway, like a bad boyfriend, my plan is to win you back with sweet talk and lavish gifts, only in this case my gift to you takes the form of ooey gooey carby goodness, and not a pearl necklace that you will later throw out the window in a fit of rage. Damn, there I go again. So, hilariously bitter quips aside, I’m back (and just when you thought you were over me…)

Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas and Mexican Rice with Black Beans

Okay, so I know this picture is enormous, and I’ll be fixing that tomorrow. But I couldn’t wait until then to share this. After a month of not cooking all that much, and surviving off delivery menus and pita with hummus, I was finally inspired to cook something, and not just anything, but these insanely deliciously mind-blowing green chili chicken enchiladas. Along with the tomato-and-chili-laden rice with black beans, I finally cooked and ate a real meal. And it was just what I needed. More details to follow, however, both recipes were slightly tweaked versions of The Pioneer Woman’s White Chicken Enchiladas and Mexican Rice. And can we all take a moment to pause and be grateful that such combinations of carbs, cheese, and cream exist in this world.

Spaghetti Cacio, Pepe e Uovo

October 12th, 2009

This pasta is freaking phenomenal and incredibly easy to throw together. There’s no real recipe and just a handful of ingredients, all of which you probably already have. I first ran into this dish at a gorgeous little restaurant on East 4th Street, and recreated it last week when my fridge was very nearly bare. I was shocked at how great it turned out. So make this, even if you think it sounds weird. Make it today. Trust me.

Strip Club Sushi Buffet: Not As Appetizing As It Sounds.

October 7th, 2009

A Break from Our Usual Programming – Today I present you with BingeNYC’s first guest blog, an entertaining review by J. Slernon (Clearly all names in this post have been changed, so don’t bother googling). While this is not necessarily the sort of review I’d generally include on the site, I’m pretty sure the entertainment value here outweighs the fact that in all likelihood, not many of you dear readers are looking to dine on sushi surrounded by strippers.

Stripper

As the fatigue of the workweek began to take its toll, my mind going numb from paper work and hunger, thoughts of a nervous breakdown were interrupted by a tap on the shoulder. ”Hey man, what are your plans for lunch?” my friend and fellow colleague Don, asked one long and drawn out Friday afternoon. “I’m starving, and I’m going nuts sitting in this office”. I let my stomach ponder for a moment. “How about Flash Dancers?” I joked, referring to the quaint little strip club down the street from our Manhattan office building. Every day on my way to work, a man hands me a flier for the “2 for 1 Happy Hour and Sushi Buffet” at Flash Dancers on 52nd Street. Only in New York City can you lunch at a burlesque joint across the street from Shrek the Musical. “Yes!” Don emphatically cried. “I’ve been working my ass off all week, and its Friday. I could really go for some sushi, lets do it!” I flinched briefly, as I was low on funds, the weekend had not even started yet, and strip clubs, history has shown, tend to cost me a lot of money. But I’d be damned if I was going to wimp out in front of my new co-worker and let him call my bluff. Besides, what, am I not going to spend my lunch break at a strip club?

Epic Breakfast Sandwich

October 4th, 2009

Okay, so apparently when I said “later today” in my last post, what I really meant was “two days later.” My bad. SORRY. Anyway, I know you’ll forgive me as soon as you get a look at this incredibly absurd delicious breakfast sandwich…

ALIVE + My New ChefCrush

October 2nd, 2009

It’s been so long! I know I’ve rather disappeared…To be completely honest, I was having some doubts about the point of this blog, about the “voice” of my writing, blah blah blah existential crisis, whatever. Point being, I’ve decided that I DO love doing this, and I’m going to keep doing it. Yay! So, I’ll be posting the recipe for an absolutely KILLER breakfast sandwich later today. In the meantime, however, I give you my latest ChefCrush. And by latest, I mean the only person thats managed to (maybe) usurp Marco Pierre White (sexy can i…)

Enter Michael Voltaggio, currently of The Dining Room at The Langham, which rocks a Michelin Star. I mean, he’s totally Eric the Vamp, but with a tan and sick tattoos. Obviously my Top Chef favorite. And is it wrong that I totally had this thought running through my head as I searched for an appropriately sexy pic?: “Maybe he will Google himself, and my site will come up, and ENTER TRUE LOVE?” No, I don’t think there’s anything crazy about that at all…

Review: Le Souk Harem

September 21st, 2009

Thanks to a friend that works with the fabulous Lizzie Grubman PR, I scored a seat at the soft-opening of Le Souk Harem. So, dragging Tess and Marissa avec moi, we hit the Harem last week. Having experienced the original Le Souk through a hookah-and-alcohol-induced haze, I was interested to check out their latest foray into dining. After arriving at the restaurant at eight pm, we were quickly whisked up to the third floor dining room. We immediately ordered a bunch of drinks (for reviewing purposes. right.): a jalapeño margarita, a mango mojito, some pear-nonsense, and a pitcher of red sangria (everyone else was drinking it, so we felt obligated to check it out). The sangria was decent, but the real standout was the jalapeño margarita. Many people might find it a touch too spicy, but Tess and I both really liked the kick of burning hot pepper spiking the sweet margarita base.

Goat Cheese and Tomato Tart + We’re BACK

September 11th, 2009

First off, my apologies if you visited the site yesterday and were greeted with a blank white page. Somehow, my WordPress update totally failed and erased the blog (which I had backed up the day before, MASSIVE SIGH OF RELIEF). So, we’re back. Now, onto the good stuff. This tart is phenomenal. I made it for dinner with a good friend, before I remembered she is dairy & gluten-free. Oops. Oh well, more for me. Make this baby a day in advance; the goat-cheese custard will need about 12 hours in your fridge to really firm up.

Two More Pizza Ideas: Heirloom Tomato with Fresh Mozzarella & Peach with Goat Cheese and Arugula

September 3rd, 2009

Naming your favorite food. Such a huge question, isn’t it? Now, as someone that fully indulges my insane love for all things edible, you may think that I’d choose something fancy and complicated, requiring fifty stages of preparation and advanced culinary technique. Or something really obscure, that is only found on the north-east corner of a specific street in a tiny town in a country half-way across the world. Maybe something daring, something from which the average person would run screaming, a particularly nasty piece of offal perhaps, or that pufferfish sashimi that just might kill you if prepared incorrectly. It is with a tiny bit of embarrassment (and, to be honest, a tiny bit of pride) that I thus present my favorite favorite FAVORITE food in the world: pizza.
